Our classes cover all aspects of fibre, fabric and needle crafts, from beginner to experienced. They are held in our spacious and bright country kitchen in a renovated Edwardian Farmhouse just outside Banbridge. Enjoy the tranquil and scenic countryside in a relaxed and friendly environment while learning a new craft.
We have many on-going weekly classes and one day workshops - head over to www.facebook.com/pg/fibrecottage/events/ to see the current list of our classes and workshops.
We are available to provide demonstrations to various community groups. Our spinning demonstrations are very popular - they are a great opportunity to learn about the different characteristics of the fleece from different sheep breeds along with the different fibres that are used for spinning into yarn. The presentation shows the different stages - raw and carded fleece, different fibres and the finished products. There is a general history of the spinning wheel and how the product of yarn has changed over the centuries with the invention of machinery and man made fibres, but also how little the spinning wheel has changed over the past few hundred years. The presentation is ended with a demonstration of the spinning wheel in use and the technique used for spinning yarn from the natural fibre. It is also a great opportunity to have a go at the spinning wheel yourself.
Some of our other demonstrations are on patchwork and quilting. This is an interactive presentation full of interesting history and information, Q&A's and plenty of samples showing the stages - from the designing process, piecing and the finished piece.
We can also provide one day workshops anywhere in Northern Ireland and Ireland on a huge range of crafts. Distance depending, these can be set up on a monthly/bi-monthly basis. We currently teach monthly sewing classes for a group of home-schooled children, as well as adult craft groups around Counties Down, Armagh and Antrim.
